For her exhibition, photographer Steffi EckelmannHeller has taken portraits depicting life stories from the LGBTI community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual and Intersexual) in present-day Cambodia. In the interplay between family traditions and social transgressing of boundaries, the powerful photographic images document the daily struggle to be seen and accepted as a human being – free from clichés and transcending any victim status. Instead, they focus on the process of self-determination within Cambodia’s rigid gender dualism.
